2007/10/30 Something interesting1. 'Do not feed the lab helper' - this is what I saw on the wall of our lab, up till now, I have not found any explanation of that, but it is really fun.
2. The ambiguity of the motto of the College: Because our motto is written in Latin, and the Latin word 'IMPERII' could have many translations, together with the fact that there is no word equivalent to 'the' or 'is' in the sentence, different translation of our motton could vary dramatically from each other. The official translation is: Knowledge is the adornment and protection of the State. However, it could also be translated into 'Universal knowledge is beauiful and necessay', or literally, into 'Donimation over knowledge is an honour and protection' (Sorry, I forgot where did I saw that interesting artical arguing about our motto, you can Google it out). Therefore, what does the sentence really means? Probably both?
3. Only burgers and some cold meals are supplied in the Juniour Common Room (in contrast with Seniour Common Room, which only opens to staff and PhD students), it seems that they take granted that only young people can still bare this kind of rubish food. Moreover, there is no Machiatto in JCR, but other types of coffee are supplied, why only Machiatto absents?
4. How to avoid absence? By calculating its cost. Each class worth 50 pound. Keep it in mind, and you will just be very happy if the teacher does not want to stop when the time is up.
5. So far, Google is the only company that has given job presentation in the department rather than banks. What department do you think it is? Economics? Finance? Management? No, Computing... Surprise? Me either.
6. Learning the vary foundation of Marxist Philosophy at Imperial College as a course of Computer Science. Firstly, what do you consider the vary foundation of Marxist Philosophy is? haha, tough question, really? According to the history, the answer should goes to Modal Logic (consult a dictionary to find out its Chinese translation, what should be vary familiar to you if you have not failed on course of Marxist Philosophy). However, do you know that it has also led to a multi-billion pound industry nowadays? Moreover, do you know it is also the very foundation of Model Checking, Concurrency Computation and thus certainly the base of Computer Science? I did not know either, before I took this course. Using formula and algorithm to solve logic problem mathematically is really cool! And it is even better to study a method which can define 'necessity', 'possibility', 'knowledge', 'belief' and many other ambiguous terms in purely rational way and use them to do deduction! Only to know the existence of this theory so that Marxist Philosophy is not totally bases on YY (imagination) is a great feeling.
2007/10/29 I am backThis is just a notic to say that I am going to use this site as my blog again. At the same time, my page at xiaonei.com is closed from further updating.
Unfortunately, xiaonei.com could not escape from the strong influences of the internet environment in China. It lost its purity over time, and eventially became something that is just opposing to its orginal claim. What a tragedy.
Therefor, I am returning to my MSN Blog.
However, due to my tight schedule in the College, I can neither give any promise about how often I will update my blog, nor be certain for that I will finish all articles I start in the future. Therefore, please do not blame me for any incompletion that may occur, or if I leave this site unchangeed for weeks.
Anyway, if I have ideas, and more importantly, if I could catch enough time, I will surely write my stories down. Of course, photos will be uploaded as well. Although my skill in photography is trivial, the important thing should be the scene been captued in the photo rather than the artistic value of the photo in itself, for I also expect nothing on this aspect.
So much for today, got to back to reading now, see you next time.
